Crystal Systems Corp. Four Mirror Optical Floating Zone Furnace
Description
The floating zone technique produces large, high purity single crystals, which are hard to synthesize with other methods. Sample environment options include pressures up to 9.5 atms under flowing Ar, O2, or air. The furnace heat is a result of four ellipsoidal mirrors which focus the light from halogen lamps, ultimately melting a small portion of the sample known as the molten zone. The mirror stage controls the location of the molten zone, which can travel between 0.01 – 300 mm/hr and reach temperature of up to 2200 C. Upper and lower shaft rotation can vary between 5 – 100 rpm and total crystal growth length can get as long as 150 mm. A CCD camera allows the user to monitor the molten zone and determine appropriate growth parameters.
